How flexible is the world of work really?
A growing number of people want to work where they choose, when they choose. Technical developments and digitalisation are playing into our hands, making it possible to do many things that were previously unthinkable. But different countries have different customs and laws. In fact, it can be a veritable jungle out there. There are reports in the media about special workation visas, cross-border commuter agreements and new teleworking rules. The reality is usually much more complex. There are four basic areas to consider:
- Work permits
- Labour law
- Coordination under social security law
- Taxes (from the perspective of the company and of the employee)
Clear rules apply in all areas, with only limited options for structuring. Ignoring these can have existential consequences for both parties. We explain the limits and suggest ways to prevent the dream from becoming a nightmare.
